I feel really positive (and a little proud!) of my current work and where its going so I was excited to see what people thought of it. And what a weekend it was! Not only was I surrounded by the loveliest artists but it was super busy all weekend! I had so many amazing comments about my work, a few pieces found new homes, there’s a potential commission on the cards and a gallery approached me interested in exhibiting a couple of my large pieces! I absolutely loved the atmosphere and energy the whole weekend! You will receive one of these when you arrive but they are also online with links to each artists website and social media accounts. Seeing art in the flesh is always a completely different experience but it is worth having a bit of a look before hand and noting down any artwork which has grabbed you or a particular artist whose work you like. 3) Bring a pen! It sounds silly but trust me it’s worth remembering. There are so many artists and even more artwork exhibited that it can be easy to forget where that particular piece you liked was hung. It’s not a race, enjoy the experience. It’s worth having an initial look, chat to artists and note down anything that grabs your attention in your brochure, then have a coffee in the cafe and talk about what has stood out. Then when you have had a break from the colour and busyness revisit the pieces and artists that stood out to you. 6) Talk to the artists! Quite often chatting with an artist about why they create pieces the way they do, how they find inspiration, why they use those particular materials….it can give a different and deeper insight into the work and process, creating an understanding and appreciation. The artists wont give you the big sell, their work is incredibly personal and they created it because they love to create. If you keep thinking about a particular piece it means there is that connection. I had several visitors come back to ‘Autumn Explosion’ several times as it kept drawing them in. In the end it came down to affordability and where it was going to hang. 9) Discuss Logistics! Some artists will offer frame choices, and will bring the piece of art to your home so you can see it in situ before buying. However, this is a gamble as the piece could sell between that conversation and the visit. 10) Don’t be afraid of asking for a commission. If you love an artist’s work and style but maybe you have a particular size or subject in mind discuss this with the artist. Commissioning an artist isn’t much more expensive and it’s actually a lovely experience for both parties; I have always really enjoyed it. Suddenly Art:Surrey Art fair felt like a success. My point is, even when initially things don’t initially work out as you hoped sometimes they lead to other more exciting opportunities. I really enjoyed going into the gallery on my days and chatting to people that popped in. We received so many compliments about our work and how we had hung the exhibition. It also gave me the motivation to begin some new work which I was finding difficult. If you are collaborating with another artist make sure both your work and personalities ‘work’. You want to enjoy the experience, not clash and make it negative. Likewise, your work needs to compliment; whether its the style, materials or subject matter. Although you are individual artists, you are part of a single exhibition. 2) Communication and working together. Communicate, communicate, communicate! You are in this together. Be honest and open to suggestions. Work together when hanging the exhibition so that the art flows and looks good as a whole. Decide fairly who is covering which days at the gallery. When you are manning the gallery it becomes obvious very quickly if a visitor likes a particular piece of work. If it is not yours you need to advocate for that artist and their work. Interest, a compliment, or a sale is a win for everyone. 4) Smile! People will look through the window and can feel nervous or unsure about walking through that door. I always wonder if they think we are going to give them the hard sell or maybe we wont let them leave without buying anything! But, a welcoming smile can give someone that encouragement to enter, and who knows where it might lead… it might be a sale then and there, a future sale, or a lovely chat. Either way a friendly smile is a must! 5) It’s in the touches. When I arrived on my first day manning the gallery, Tracy had arranged a vase of beautiful soft pink tulips. It made me smile and definitely impacted my mood whenever I looked at them, so why wouldn’t this have a positive impact on any visitors? This also goes for the gallery in general. If work is kept straight, floors clean and desks tidy it creates a professional impression and does not distract the eyes from where you want them to be - the work!!! 6) Think long term. Take your newsletter sign up sheets! If people enter the gallery they like art, they might have spotted a piece that has caught their eye. Asking if they would like to sign up to your newsletter is a great way to develop the connection you have made by chatting to them. I really need to be more pro active in asking people to sign up to my newsletter (which I actually haven’t set up yet!). So far I only have a few subscribers and that has been from them asking rather than me; I know, I know, thats not good! There is no excuse as I have sign up sheets, I just need to ask people and then I can work out how to send a newsletter out! Not difficult, but it’s time I would rather spend being creative which is what has been stopping me. The other job is to have prints of my work made. I have done this previously and I currently have a selection of A3 Giclée prints for sale however, now I am working on a larger scale my scanner isn’t big enough. I had a lot of people interested in prints of the Seasons so this is something I really need to organise sooner rather than later! I have done a lot of research and have found a printers at Wimbledon Art Studios that photographs and produces Giclée prints. I just need to book an appointment and start the process whilst I source mounts and packaging! I have older (and current;) work that I would love to find a new homes so I can then focus on creating new pieces. Written by Marielle Bayliss and illustrated by your truly, they were a big passion project for us both; my son who has Autism and Dyspraxia was my inspiration. They were a lot of work in a short space of time; 164 coloured illustration in 6months, but they were so much fun to illustrate. I just loved drawing the whimsical characters and I actually missed them when they were complete! The focus once they are in print is to make people aware of the books and to get them into bookshops, schools and libraries. That’s where the visits and workshops come in. I have travelled to schools, bookshops and libraries and even painted the neuron characters onto windows! It has been such a big learning curve, I have met some amazing people and had a lot of fun doing it! I love having my own creative space, having all my materials to hand and being able to leave things out without having to pack them all away. I have also noticed the way I work has changed; I am working on larger pieces, playing with painting brightly coloured frames, and it is inspiring putting art on my walls whether it is my own or postcards of other artists work. I usually learn so much during these weekends both from chatting to existing or potential clients and from other artists exhibiting. It is also lovely top catch up with artist friends! The art fair in the spring financially was less successful however, this turned into a positive event when I was asked to collaborate with another artist I met at this fair in a gallery exhibition. It made me understand that these events are as much about selling pieces of work as it is getting your name and work out there and networking . You never know where they might lead! Visiting these places opens the doors to inspiration and how different artists respond and express their creativity. I always think galleries, museums and art fairs have so much energy; they are full of colour, techniques and expression to become immersed in. Taking a break from the studio or place you work, getting some fresh air and soaking up a different environment can be food for the soul and inspiration! I often will visit somewhere with my family and more often than not I will be lagging behind them taking photographs of something that has grabbed my attention. Normally it’s nature related! There will be times I am inspired to play with the idea straight away, sometimes I will mull it over and let the seed germinate and other times I will file the photos away to be used another time. I mainly follow artists and galleries and love that I am not only part of this creative and supportive online community but I can see and discover art and artists that I may never have found otherwise from all over the world! I organise them in folders so they don’t get lost and absorbed within the trillion of photos of my kids and dog. They are the results of visiting galleries, museums and art fairs, being out and about, and taking screen shots of something that I have seen on social media that has sparked my interest for some reason. I normally use You Tube for a specific reason, whether that is how to use watercolour ground or how to mount paper onto a panel. The artists that film these ‘how to’s are so informative and generous to share their experience and thoughts. For me, this is a monthly inspiration fix that I can enjoy straight away and keep to look back on as a reference source. This is the same with books. I have all my art books in my studio and will have a flick through them sometimes for a few minutes, other times the whole morning will pass! I will pop on post-its to mark pages and leave books out that I either find inspirational or focus on a technique I am using. I started four pieces before the summer holidays began, drawing them out and applying the watercolour washes so that I could dip into applying the pen detail around the kids. I was surprised that I managed to complete three out of the four pieces (Boom!) I had been thinking about this throughout the summer - I knew what I wanted to do, it was just making that decision and doing it. I ordered plain wooden frames as my intention was always to paint them. The question was whether I should choose a generic colour which would ‘fit’ with most decors and so opening the potential of a sale, or should I have fun and go bright? It’s kind of obvious which way I went, and I am so glad that I did! I absolutely love these colours. They were chosen as not only did they work with the artworks individually but also as a group and I did need to think about them sitting together when they are hung at Art:Surrey and any future art fairs and exhibitions. I set everything up so it was almost like a production line. I gave each frame a light sand and wiped off any dust before and between coats of paint. This gave the frames a really clean finish. I am so pleased with how they turned out, it really was worth doing it myself so that I could choose exactly the colour I wanted. I always loved this piece but it never received the attention I thought it deserved. Originally I placed it in a dark grey frame thinking it would be less ‘out there’ and would ‘work’ in peoples homes. But, it absolutely destroyed the piece. The blue frame however, injects that life back into it. Why not! - After doing my research, and finding out the size of the windows, my first job was to plan the design and composition in my sketchbook. Once I had a good idea of where I was going with it, I sketched out the templates that I would be taping to the outside of the windows. I used my own bi-folds as I was doing this to get a sense of how the images would work together. Don’t forget, it needs to be in reverse if you are painting on the inside of a window for it to be seen on the outside; this includes any lettering! Once I was happy with the templates I went over the designs with a thick marker. The next part was to have a go at painting a window and I would really recommend you did this. I used acrylic paint as its relatively cheap, washes off easily and has a good depth of colour when applied to the windows. Why not! - The neurons and my design generally is flat blocks of colour and it is very difficult to achieve a smooth coverage using a paintbrush, so I played around with applying the paint with sponges. It worked brilliantly! There was a bit of texture, no streaking and once the paint layer was dry it could be layered to create a bolder block of colour if that was wanted. On the flip side it would be very difficulty to add lettering so I cut out templates which I could then stick to the inside window (backwards!), sponge over, remove once dry and paint. Having my art supplies around me has already meant I have started to work differently and more productively. I now have the space to spread out; if I am waiting for something to dry I can carry on with other work instead of fighting for space. During this time my eldest son had been diagnosed with autism and we were waiting for an assessment for DCD. This isn’t the end of the world as I know many artists exhibit work several times before it finds its new home, I think its more that I didn’t have the excitement of hanging new work. I did plan on exhibiting my six original butterflies but the frames were not great and I didn’t have time to get them professionally framed. This was frustrating as I actually think they might have sold! The exhibition itself was very busy throughout, lots of pieces were bought, and commissions were planned….just not from my stand. One of the first changes I made for my work was having my pieces professionally framed with non reflective glass; I always thought I would do this, just further down the line. I have mentioned my love of non reflective glass before in previous blogs, and I cannot stress the positive impact this has had on my pieces. I am a convert! My work is all about the detail and the non reflective glass allows the viewer to see each mark and line. It is costly but for me and the type of work I am currently creating it is an investment, it is reflected my pricing, and I think my pieces deserve and should be displayed in the best possible way. As the artist, if I do not value them and think they should be invested in then how can a potential buyer?! The main focus this year which has been so much work and so much fun has been the book illustrations. After meeting the author Marielle Bayliss almost two years ago we have been developing an idea she had into a series of books. Earlier this year she took the manuscript for the first book along with several of my illustrated pages to her publisher. I’m not a big podcast listener but I do enjoy her podcasts; they are light, friendly and it feels like you are sat in a coffee house with her and her husband Richie having a natter. A blog is a ‘search engine optimised tool’ or an SEO for short. It helps search engines understand your content, and therefore enables users to find your site. If you are interested in a bit of background it’s actually quite impressive! I’ll be brief, here we go….. the Royal Academy was founded in 1768 and one of its initiatives was to establish an annual exhibition for all ‘artists of merit’ to be viewed by the general public. The first summer exhibition took place in 1769 and it has been held every year since which is pretty amazing in itself! There are over 1,700 works of art by famous artists as well as members of the public and £50,000 worth of prizes. So worth applying for both the professional and amateur artist! The Summer Exhibition aims to reflect what is happening in the art world right now, showcasing work in all media, including painting, sculpture, photography, printmaking, architecture and film. One of the things to remember is the Summer Exhibition is an CONTEMPORARY exhibition, something I am not sure my husband was entirely aware of! The pieces exhibited did form an eclectic mix of Contemporary art from beautiful pencil drawings, to a hanging pair of shoes, detailed Lino prints to splashes of paint! All work was numbered and you needed to purchase a book with the artists name, artwork’s title and price which I found a little disappointing. Firstly, visitors have already paid to enter the exhibition and then needed to buy a book for basic information on the art displayed. Surely by labelling work properly it is supporting and promoting the artists exhibiting as well as giving them kudos for exhibiting at the RA. There was however so much to see, I found I needed to walk around a few times to really take it all in! I was naturally drawn to pieces with lots of detail especially where you could really appreciate the talent and skill. This piece also caught my eye. It was one of many fabric and embroidery pieces and I think they really enhanced the exhibition. The artist exhibited an embroidered brain from the ‘neat’ front and ‘messy’ underside. The artist of these pieces painted buildings beautifully on pieces of concrete. I don’t know if the concrete was actually from the buildings they painted as again there was no information, but I would like to think they were. They were encased in Perspex boxes almost like precious museum exhibits to preserve what once was. I particularly liked this artwork. Each little piece was made from thin porcelain strips layered in the box frame. It reminded me of the delicacy of sculptor Eva Hesse who I discovered at university; the use of the materials, working with them and not against them, and appreciating their properties for what they were. There was skill yes, but also a lot of patience! Walking around I often didn’t agree or could understand why certain pieces of art were placed where they were on the gallery walls. Several small pieces were exhibited pretty high up which meant I really couldn’t see as much of the detail as I wanted to. There were so many really large pieces (and I mean large!) that could have still been viewed clearly high up but for some reason these were placed lower. One of these was Tracey Erin’s figurative painting which also won an award…..! There really were so many pieces of art to see it was a little overwhelming. Certain pieces stood out for me and I have only included a few of them in this month’s blog. Did I enjoy the exhibition? Yes, although I feel there is still an ‘exclusive club’ vibe to the Royal Academy. Did I like the pieces of art? Some of them very much so, others I could appreciate and then the cynical part of me wondered whether certain pieces were included in the exhibition (and won a prize) due to the artist’s name rather than the creativity, originality and quality of the pieces themselves. This also went for their placing on the walls! Would I go again? Yes I probably will. I did enjoy seeing lots of different types of art in a very beautiful building (it’s worth looking up!) but I do think the exhibition is very much geared up to sell art rather than expose and promote the artist. Will I ever submit my own work? Not sure it ‘fits’ but we’ll see… watch this space, you never know!!! I decided to create a new series of work based on British birds and started by developing a series of twelve mini pieces on 11cm x 12cm pieces of watercolour block . I am planning on mounting them within frames, exposing the ripped textured edges as a contrast to the crisp marks and textures of the pen and the soft wash of the watercolour. The minis will be coming with me to Art:Surrey art fair at Epsom Racecourse in the autumn, and yes they will definitely be framed with non reflective glass so all the detail can be seen! I also think I may add to this collection in the future as there are so many British Birds I would like to paint and draw (I have even started a list!)! https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/62a31027b6b620417c44f1a6/dc9dc2f1-e1a9-4f79-a5fd-6b54b7c422c4/IMG_5865.jpeg Blog - New Work, New Bird Series! - Although I have loved building up the mini British Birds collection, I also really enjoy working on a large scale in an attempt to capture a snippet of the habitat birds share within the branches of the trees as I did with the Hummingbird and Tanager pieces. After some research on which British Birds migrate (surprisingly there aren’t many!) I decided to create a series of four large but narrow panels depicting British Birds during each season. I used a selection of the British Birds from the mini collection to create a composition where there was movement and interaction between the birds. The first season I decided to depict was ‘Spring’ (title yet to be decided!) in my usual watercolour wash and pen detail style. A snapshot of a tree busy with life during this hopeful season, I wanted to capture the inquisitiveness of the Nuthatch, the quietness of blue tits and a watchful Jay guarding its nest with an apple blossom background. For ‘Summer’ I kept the same format of a ‘snapshot’ of a tree with the movement and interaction of birds to maintain a consistency. To make it individual I changed the species of birds, this time including a single watchful magpie, several busy Wrens and a couple of perching House Sparrows. As with ‘Spring’, I allowed the tree to reflect the season, this time with apples grown from the apple blossom from the first panel. I plan on continuing this theme with the ‘Autumn’ and ‘Winter’ panels. Since working on this series I feel my style when drawing birds has developed further as I play with and have become more confident in adding marks. Yep Landmark Spring Art Fair it was! - The weekend started with setting up on the Friday morning which went very smoothly partly due to the picture hook method of hanging but also because I was very selective on what I decided to hang. This was partly due to the lack of parking which was managed brilliantly by Landmark, and also a little experiment as to whether my stand would be a little less overwhelming. Yep Landmark Spring Art Fair it was! - The ‘less is more approach’ worked and I was really happy with my stand. I was especially pleased with the large Hummingbird and Tanager pieces which I previously had professionally framed with non-reflective glass; it was an investment but so worth it! If you haven’t seen non-reflective glass it is amazing; there is literally no reflections and you can see all the tiny bits of detail which is incredibly important for someone like me who spends hours adding so much detail to their work! It’s quite an intense weekend but at the same time you are also hanging around a lot between chats with the visitors and so I felt so lucky with the people I met there. Yep Landmark Spring Art Fair it was! - The Friday evening Private View is generally quiet on the sales front as the visitors are normally family and friends. The Saturday warmed up a little and I had some lovely chats with buyers and visitors local to the area who popped in to support this event. I remember one particular lady who shared some of her ‘wild adventures’ from the 1960’s!!! I received some really lovely comments from visitors, especially about my three large Hummingbird and Tanager pieces. I was so happy when the Lovebirds no.1 original found a new home with a very sweet little girl, as well as several Giclée prints and handmade cards. Yep Landmark Spring Art Fair it was! - Sunday began better than I could ever have hoped when I sold Flying Jewels to such a lovely family. The lady fell in love with it as she approached my stand and I could not be happier that it found its home with this family. It was the first of my ‘big’ pieces to sell and because it found a home with someone that felt such a strong emotional connection, it made it all the more a memorable experience. There was some additional interest in the remaining large bird pieces and email addresses and contact information was exchanged. We will see! They have such character flitting between the branches. In my piece; ‘Flying Jewels’ (left), I wanted to capture them in flight, like they were dancing in front of the leaves. In this piece I played with not only the movement of the birds but the leaves themselves. I used metallic watercolours to represent their iridescent feathers which sparkles as the viewer moves in front of the piece and the light changes. Spanish explorers visited the America’s for the first time and saw these sparkling tiny birds. They were in awe of their vibrant colours and named them ‘flying jewels’. I wanted to the Tanagers to watch the Hummingbirds flying up out of the foliage. For ‘Season of Brilliance’ (left) I wanted the Tanagers to interact with each other almost like they were having a conversation. I kept the leaves and branches in the background uniform in shape and colour so the focus was on the Tanagers and their interactions. Although each of these large pieces have a running theme and similar quality to them they are each individual pieces with different intentions. I developed these ideas further when working on wooden panel boards for ‘The Dance’ and ‘Flying Together’ (below). When you work from home its also a resource to connect to other creatives, share ideas and learn new approaches. I have taken part in a variety of these during the last few years. They have varied from a short and sweet 14 Days of Fruit, Inktober during the month of October to a year long Nature Journal. Why? - The purpose of the daily prompts is help small businesses to tell their story behind the brand. It gives an insight into the person, a snap shot of the process and highlights the hard work which goes in to creating and building a small business. It’s also one of the few times I will pop up a photo of my face on to social media ;) On top of this, I see it as an opportunity to review aspects of my business, consider the reasons why I do things or have chosen to take a certain approach and think about where I see it going in the next 12-18 months. Do you have an idea of where it will be hung or placed? If the piece of work is part of a collection ask to see the other pieces of work. The art fair weekends went really fast and there was such a buzz and a great atmosphere at both of them which always keeps me going. I remember looking at my stand (once the dreaded imposter syndrome quietened down a little) and felt really proud of all of the hard work I had put in and how much progress I had made since my first fair. There is also that underlying pressure (completely self inflicted!) when you are your own boss; if you don’t do it then no one else will. But do you know what? The things that need to get done will, just maybe not right now, and that’s also ok. So, for the last few weeks I have stepped back from work and social media. I have updated my website and Etsy Shop, exercised, spent time outside, caught up with friends and enjoyed half term and Halloween with my family. As I mentioned in last July’s blog, I am a BIG planner and starting up this business gave me an excuse to embrace this and go all out with my lists and organisation! I tend to not do things gradually, I’m either in it or not, and I was 100% in this! So, although my plans had generally a positive impact on setting it up there were areas where I should have slowed down and dipped my toe in rather than bomb dived. For a year before opening my Etsy shop I created work and paid for high quality Giclée prints not really considering the possibility that my work would develop and change. Thankfully, I didn’t order lots of prints but enough where I now look at them and I feel like my work and its style has changed and progressed. Say ‘YES’ to every opportunity that arises! I remember listening to an artist being interviewed on a podcast a few years ago and her advice to artists starting out was to ‘say yes to everything as you never know where it might lead’. It really stuck with me and she was so right! I saw a post on Facebook from Friends of Fishponds asking for an artist to design new signage for our local park and I offered to help. During the whole process of creating the signage I felt like I and my work was not good enough even though I absolutely loved doing this project. But I kept going and by the end I was so proud, my clients could not have been happier and I learnt so much. Ignore the Imposter Syndrome! Every time a new opportunity or event crops up the imposter syndrome will raise its rather annoying head! In some ways it can be a positive thing as it makes sure you put in your all and it usually appears when whatever it is you are doing is important to you and you have been pushed out of your comfort zone. I massively had imposter syndrome at my first Art Fair in March. I didn’t know what I was doing but I took the attitude that I was there to learn, enjoy talking to people and meet other artists, all of which I achieved. Social media - love it or hate it you will need to embrace it! Personally, I think social media can be a great resource if used well. I keep my accounts purely for my art and my personal life private but that is my choice. I know many artists share stories about their family and that is their choice. You need to post what you feel comfortable sharing and stick to it. I will not share things just to get followers or likes, I want people to follow me who enjoy my work and are interested in my journey. You also do not necessarily get sales from followers or likes, and don’t get me started on the ever changing algorithm! Saying that, social media is a great way to create a community and I have found some very supportive and inspiring people on Instagram which is just wonderful especially as artists tend to be fairly isolated workers! 8. Build relationships! It is so important to build relationships whether it is with other artists locally or through social media, existing or potential clients and other small business owners. It’s a whole different story during the school holidays as the timetable and routine goes firmly out of the window and to be honest, although its a juggle, I do love hanging out with my kiddies and having less school logistics to deal with! This is the first summer since having children that I have had to fit in work as well and this is partly because I have made a commitment to exhibit at two art fairs in the autumn and they are fast approaching (eek!). It is such an easy way to stay organised and focused. There’s a ‘brain dump’ at the start of each month which is where I write my overall list for that month, I then pick from this list when planning my days and weeks. I schedule in everything including exercise as these are the things that are SO important but will be forgotten or put in the ‘I’ll do it later when I have time’ box! I use it for work and family life so that I know what I am doing each day and week, and during the holidays it’s no different. At the moment I am loving my metallic paints and will quite often use them with my standard Van Gogh watercolours (which I also love!). Step 1: Once I finished roughly planning out this idea in my sketchbook and decided on the colour pallet I lightly sketched it out on to the watercolour block. I try to keep the sketch minimal, focusing on position, shape and form. For this piece I used the Arches Block as I wanted to work on A2 paper. Step 2: When I was happy with the light sketch I then re-drew it using a light grey pen adding all the detail and information I needed for adding the colour. I then rubbed out the pencil so the paper was clean with clear pen lines. I tend to keep it very basic and treat it as a base colour layer working from the background to the foreground. I add very little detail with the colour so it’s quite blocky. The naturalness of the wood definitely appeals to me and the grain and colour often becomes part of my work. Although I think my work will always include pen and watercolour it is exciting to experiment with them to see what happens, or what effects can be achieved in order to develop work and expand on ideas. That’s not to say these wont remain my favourites, I just dont want to limit myself or my work. I recently discovered the work of Tiffany Bozic, check her out! She creates these beautiful acrylic paintings on Maple board of different species and habitats. She inspired me to try out my metallic watercolours and pen (hummingbird pic) on wood and I really liked the result .. until I tried varnishing it and the pen smudged (note to self, use spray varnish and not liquid - I knew this but I have no patience). A few more of these wood circles have been ordered for future work.
