I love the seasons and the changes to nature. My husband always gives me tulips for Mother’s Day as for me they are a reminder that nature is finally awakening; there are shoots popping up from the ground and finally colour! I loved these colourful tulips and knew they needed the equally colourful and characterful Tanagers, which I just love drawing. I used metallic watercolours on the Tanagers which glisten when they catch the light.

I spotted this vase of wildflowers when out with my children and took a photo. They are small, unassuming and wild. We all know the importance of wildflowers and it seemed ‘right’ that I included several UK butterflies flitting around the wildflowers to give movement and life to this piece. The butterflies; Speckled Wood, Peacock, Painted Lady, Purpler Emperor, Tortoiseshell and Holly Blue have touches of metallic watercolours which glisten when they catch the light.

I was given these beautiful flowers by my parents, they were just waiting to be painted! When we gift flowers, we are bringing nature into our home. I love drawing birds and so I wanted to take this one stage further and include hummingbirds flitting around the flowers. To highlight the shimmer of these gorgeous little birds I used metallic watercolours which glisten when they catch the light

When collecting my children from school I saw this pot bursting with berries, leaves and flowers and knew I had to paint it. To me it was an explosion of autumn! I wanted to fill the panel with this celebration through watercolour splashes to contrast with the control of the pen and dense textured layers. The piece evolved and changed during its creation but I felt that needed a few touches of life so I added a House Sparrow, bee, caterpillar, snail and butterfly to enhance its energy further.

Hummingbirds have beautifully coloured feathers which shimmer in the light and when they are in flight they dart and dip like they are dancing. The interaction between these two Hummingbirds and the metallic watercolours was my response to this inspiration.
